National Committee launches in Mongolia

The Future Earth Mongolia Committee launched in Ulaanbaatar on 8 June, 2018 at its inaugural meeting organized by the Mongolian Academy of Sciences (MAS). The event was held in conjunction with the meeting for the Regional Committee for Asia and the Pacific (RCAP) of  the International Council for Sciences (ICSU), which took place on 7-9 June at the National University of Mongolia.

At the event, Prof. JIA Gensuo, Deputy Director of the Key Laboratory of Regional Climate-Environment for East Asia at the Institute of Atmospheric Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, China and a member of ICSU's RCAP gave a lecture on “Digital Belt & Road – Climate change and disaster risks”, which was followed by speeches by members of the Future Earth National Committee for Mongolia including:

  • D. Odgerel, Head of Science and Technology Policy and Planning Department, Ministry of Education, Culture Science and Sports, Mongolia
  • Prof. Avid. B, Secretary General, Mongolian Academy of Sciences
  • Ms. S. Oyun, Member of the Future Earth Advisory Committee

Prof. Tetsuzo Yasunari, Director General of the Research Institute for Humanity and Nature, Japan and member of the Future Earth Advisory Committee gave a keynote speech titled “Future Earth: Research for sustainability in the Asia-Pacific region”, where he emphasized the important roles of national and regional networks as bottom-up processes to tackle global sustainability challenges.

The event was moderated by Dr. T. Chuluun, Chair of the Future Earth Mongolia Committee, and participants discussed objectives and plans for the next two years of the Future Earth Mongolian Committee.
