We promote co-design and co-production of research, science-policy engagement and communications for the Future Earth network in Asia. The responsibilities of the Regional Centre are to facilitate regional networking, enable research, provide leadership and drive regional processes.

Research Enabling

We promote, facilitate and enable transdisciplinary research addressing global and regional environmental sustainability through hosting of symposia, workshops, seminars and convening on imperative research themes with a focus on Asia.

Capacity Building

We contribute to capacity building for early career researchers in Asia to be engaged in transdisciplinary research through organizing training courses.

Regional Networking

We facilitate formation and strengthen linkages and collaboration of community networks in Asia through organizing networking meetings and liaising community members with larger Future Earth initiatives.

Developing Science-Based Pathways for Sustainability in Asia

More businesses, cities, and governments want to work to develop local and global targets that help maintain Earth systems like land, water, and biodiversity. Science-Based Pathways for Sustainability is an initiative of Future Earth, aimed at knowledge-based decision making that supports the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Future Earth Asia Center is guiding the Science-Based Pathways for Sustainability Initiative in the Asian region by supporting bottom-up initiatives from Asian countries and linking them across countries.

Future Earth in Asia Workshops

Future Earth Asia Center has organized a series of Symposium on Future Earth in Asia since 2014. Objectives include cultivating a transdisciplinary research network in the region and identifying imperative research themes with a focus on Asia.

Facilitating Research Agenda Setting in Japan – Japan Strategic Research Agenda

The Japan Strategic Research Agenda was developed in a highly transdisciplinary approach to identify priority research areas to contribute to a sustainable future while optimising Japan’s distinct research arenas. Collecting opinions of 100,000 citizens and researchers through internet questionnaires, the project selected 10 themes and 110 priority research topics through workshops and discussions engaging with stakeholders.

Sustainable Consumption and Production

Encouraging an urgent societal transition to sustainable consumption and production patterns is a major sustainability challenge. Future Earth Asia Center supports the Systems of Sustainable Consumption and Production Knowledge-Action Network (SSCP KAN) that works to advance a more systemic approach to SCP, and to encourage and enable an urgent transformation in theory and practice to SCP systems.

Networking

Enhancing collaboration in Asia

We are committed to expanding and strengthening collaboration with the sustainability research and practice community in Asia. Our efforts include organizing Future Earth Asia community meetings, hosting regional sessions at conferences, and facilitating the launch of the Future Earth National Network in Asia.

Capacity Building

TERRA School

The Transdisciplinarity for Early careeR Researchers in Asia School (TERRA School) is a short-term intensive course on co-creation and transdisciplinary research in practice. It is envisioned to be a cultivation encounter, aimed at creating awareness of what transdisciplinarity can offer and the challenges involved in its implementation.
