The Future Earth has a Secretariat consisting of five global hubs which function as a single entity, located in Canada (Montreal), France (Paris), Japan (Tokyo), Sweden (Stockholm) and the United States (Colorado), together with a set of regional centres which today cover the Middle East and North Africa, Latin America, Europe and Asia.
The Secretariat, complemented by its Regional Centres, and through its globally distributed structure, will create a platform for dialogue between scholars and stakeholders at regional, national and local levels. These regional structures are central for Future Earth to ensure that its global agenda adequately addresses regional science priorities and end user needs. To achieve this, the Secretariat will support five core functions: coordination, communication and outreach, research enabling, capacity building, synthesis and foresight.
To enhance engagement by the regional and national actors, a three-fold regional structure has been designed as follows.
The role of Regional Committees is to be an effective advocate for Future Earth in their regions and to be an effective advocate for regional interests in the global Future Earth platform. The functions of the committee, once matured, are envisioned to include:
- Initiating processes of co-design
- Facilitating regional and international interactions
- Fostering regional capacity building
- Establishing regional structures or activities appropriate to the circumstances in the region.
Regional Centres are an important, active and influential component of Future Earth’s operational structure. These centres provide a conduit for communication between Regions and the Executive Secretariat. The Regional Centres will provide the five core functions (i.e., coordination, research enabling, communication, capacity building and synthesis and foresight) of the Executive Secretariat within Regions. In addition, Regional Centres will support their Regional Committees, and help to articulate the priorities that they identify.
There are currently two Regional Centres for Future Earth: One for Asia and one for the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). The Asia Regional Centre is supported by a Regional Office for South Asia, the MENA Centre with one for North Africa. A third Regional Office is in development for Southern Africa. In addition, the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research in Montevideo, Uruguay, is a strategic partner for Latin America.
Future Earth’s Regional Centres and Offices play a number of roles in attaining Future Earth’s vision. These roles vary from one region to the other and may include:
- Connecting researchers and societal partners, such as leaders in policy, business and civil society, to each other and to Future Earth.
- Coordinating and organising workshops, training programmes and conferences on sustainability research.
- Launching national and regional-level research initiatives.
- Connecting regional researchers and societal partners to funding opportunities.
- Supporting Global Research Projects active in their region.
- Supporting the establishment and running of National Networks for Future Earth.
National Committee and Structure
The role of National Committees and structures is to communicate, make relevant and promote Future Earth principles and activities within a country, to encourage participation, and to be a bridging-point for the global Future Earth platform with research and societal stakeholders, probably mostly via the relevant Regional Committee and Regional Centre.
The National Committees should be self-organized but to be recognized by Future Earth, they must meet certain criteria for eligibility. Learn more about National Networks here.
National and sub-regional networks are formed in the following countries and regions in Asia and are emerging in New Zealand and Indonesia.

Regional Centre for Future Earth in Asia
The Asia Regional Centre is one of the four Regional Centres which constitute part of the Future Earth Secretariat, and it is hosted by the Research Institute for Humanity and Nature (RIHN) in Kyoto, Japan.
The Asia Regional Center provides a conduit for communication between the region and the Secretariat and advocates the Future Earth initiative in the region through close collaboration with the Regional Advisory Committee for Asia, a precursor to a Regional Committee.
A South Asian Regional Office of Future Earth was convened in Bangalore, south India, in July 2016. The new Regional Office for South Asia has a domain that spans over the countries of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation, Myanmar and a few Indian Ocean island nations. The Regional Office is hosted by the Divecha Centre for Climate Change (DCCC), Indian Institute of Science, and the Chairman of DCCC, Prof. S.K. Satheesh will serve as the Director of the Regional Office. The Office will play a key role in promoting solution-oriented research on environmental sustainability in the south Asian region.
